Making Home From War: Stories of Japanese American Exile and Resettlement Book Reading
Sunday, November 13, 2011, 3:00 p.m.
Brian Dempster, Jill Shiraki and resettlement memoir contributors Michi Tashiro and Toru Saito will discuss their new book, Making Home From War: Stories of Japanese American Exile and Resettlement.
About the book: In the aftermath of World War II, more than 110,000 persons of Japanese ancestry -roughly two-thirds of whom were American citizens -were released from forced imprisonment in U.S. concentration camps. But released to return where, after being taken from their homes along the West Coast ? When they were finally allowed to leave the internment camps, they faced a new challenge: How do you resume a life so interrupted.
The twelve memoirs that comprise Making Home from War spotlight the thinly documented and sorely understudied chapter of Japanese American history generally known as "resettlement." This collection not only gives voice to an untold history but also informs, inspires, and heals.
Panelists:
Editor: Brian Komei Dempster is a Sansei. His poems have been published in various journals and anthologies. Dempster is the editor of From Our Side of the Fence: Growing Up in America s Concentration Camps. He is currently associate professor of rhetoric and composition and a faculty member in Asian American Studies at the University of San Francisco
Production Manager: Jill Shiraki currently serves as a consultant on various literary works, performing arts, film, and community development projects. For the past six years, Shiraki has served as the project manager for Preserving California’s Japantowns, a statewide effort to document and preserve historic resources from pre-World War II Japanese American communities.
Location: Eastwind Books of Berkeley
2066 University Avenue
Berkeley, CA 94704
Fees: Free and open to the public

Nikkei Youth Scholarship Raffle
Saturday, December 3, 2011
The proceeds from this year’s raffle will help provide scholarships to need-based participants of the Nikkei Youth Cultural Heritage Program and the Takahashi Youth Ambassador Fellowship Program.
Launched this summer, the Takahashi Youth Ambassador Fellowship Program gives high school students the opportunity to travel to Japan as a U.S. cultural ambassador. Through their participation, Fellows gain an appreciation and understanding of cross-cultural exchange and develop lifelong leadership skills empowering them to become the next generation of leaders in our community. Fellows meet with representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, volunteer at a local orphanage and participate in a one-week homestay. For each student and their family, the costs can be overwhelming; funds from this scholarship raffle will help subsidize a portion of the fee each student is required to pay to participate in the program.
For the past four summers, the Nikkei Youth Cultural Heritage Program, in cooperation with the Kobe YMCA Language Program (Hyogo Prefecture, Japan) has provided a one month intensive language and cultural heritage program to over 22 students from universities across California and the U.S. The JCCCNC together with the Los Angeles, Hawaii and Washington Japanese Cultural and Community Centers select participants from their respective Cultural Center’s every spring. The program provides students the opportunity to use and practice their Japanese language skills on a daily basis within the classroom and with their home stay family.
Help a student in the Japanese American community define his or her own identity by purchasing or selling the enclosed raffle tickets. Through your support, students can establish a greater connection to their sometimes seemingly distant heritage, as well as encourage continued interest in Japan, its people, culture and history. Recipients not only receive financial aid, but also the encouragement and well wishes from our community.
The Grand Prize is two roundtrip coach tickets on United Airlines good for travel to anywhere in the continental United States and many more great prizes. The drawing will be held on Saturday, December 3rd.
Fees: $5 each or six (6) tickets for $25
More info: Please contact Yumi Yukawa at (415) 567-5505 or by email.
